PODCAST: Thando J: Live performance and exclusive interview

The Afro pop artist Thando Ntlakanipho Juqu, popularly known by his stage name Thando J graced our Podcast Slaying With Asa with a relaxed chat and good vibes, where he divulged all the details and even treated us to a live performance in our studio.

About Thando J

Thando J, originally from the amaHlubi region in the village of eMtsane, began his musical journey by playing the keyboard at home.

He continued to develop his passion for music throughout high school, where he was part of the worship team at his local church and a member of the Kokstad band, Siyakwazi Ukwenza Art and Crafts.

In 2015, he furthered his musical education by studying piano and performance at Gamalakhe Esayidi FET College.

During the same year, he began recording music with friends and set up his own home studio, paving the way for his brand, African Rhythm Entertainment (ARE).

Thando J’s musical inspiration and genre

Thando J sang on the song iMvula by Blaqrythm.

He has also performed on stages where well-known artists like Emtee have performed, including the East Griqualand Kulture Fest held in Kokstad on 24th September 2019.

During his appearance on the Slaying With Asa podcast, Thando J discussed the primary focus of his music.

“My music focuses on love and socio-economic issues faced by South Africans. I draw my inspiration from observing love and how people live, my own relationships with friends, family and partner.

“My music is a combination of Afro pop and soul music. I draw inspiration from the likes of Sjava, the late gospel singer Lundi and Kelly Khumalo,” said Thando.

Upcoming performances

For Thando J’s fans, you may need to mark your calender as this may be interesting news for you to know that Thando has an upcoming concert on the 26th of November at the Joburg Theatre.

He will be gracing his fans with his greatest hits and his songs Ukhanyiso and Sebenza will be among those he will be performing at the concert.
