Train-accident trial to start on Wednesday

Truck driver charged with 25 counts of murder to stand trial on Wednesday.

NELSPRUIT – The trial of a truck driver accused of killing 25 people when he collided with a train last year, was set to begin on Monday. Mr George Mandlazi (42) appeared in the Nelspruit High Court on 25 counts of murder.

The trial was postponed due to the defence not being ready to commence. The case will resume on Wednesday. Mandlazi’s truck ploughed into a coal train in Hectorspruit near Malalane on July 13, 2012. This led to the death of over two dozen seasonal orange pickers. He had pleaded not guilty and previously told the court that his actions were not premeditated. Mandlazi said he couldn’t remember precisely how the accident occurred.

Mandlazi is currently out on R3 000 bail.
