Mpumalanga MEC speaks of state of roads at Transport Month launch

The MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, said they are in talks with various stakeholders about resolving the state of the province’s roads.

The Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, said during the provincial launch of Transport Month at the Machado Toll Plaza N4 on Thursday October 4 he is aware that the state of the roads in the province is not good. He said it is public knowledge that there have been complaints that the roads are riddled with many potholes.

Thomo said they are trying everything possible to ensure they rope in various stakeholders for assistance.

“We have been meeting with the mines in the past months as part of soliciting funding. We can indicate positively that they are coming on board to assist us. We are aware of the complaints that we get on a daily basis and we are addressing most of these challenges with which we are confronted, especially when it comes to our road networks.”

October’s Transport Month continues to play a critical role in promoting road safety and highlighting the significant economic impact enabled by the provision of efficient and reliable public transport. The launch included the unveiling of 12 new vehicles for the Transport Inspectorate during a multipronged enforcement operation at the Machadodorp Toll Plaza.

“We continue to enhance our transport operations. The 12 new vehicles will be distributed across the four districts, augmenting the Transport Inspectorate unit’s enforcement work and enhancing our department’s inspection capabilities,” said Thomo.

The law enforcement agency was joined by the MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Jackie Macie, the chairperson of the portfolio committee, Jesta Sidell, various stakeholders, including traffic law enforcement, the national traffic police, SAPS, Emakhazeni Local Municipality Traffic and the Department of Home Affairs.
Thomo also said there will be a number of activities conducted during Transport Month and beyond.
