WATCH: Drama at Free State Phakisa Raceway

Both drivers emerged shaken but unharmed.

Drama punctuated Saturday’s Historic Tour race meeting at the Free State Phakisa Raceway near Welkom, when a slight driving mistake by Birkin 7 driver Rob Gearing led to a huge crash during the day’s opening Sabat Lotus race.

After putting a rear wheel on the grass at about 180 km/h through Phakisa’s fastest sweep, Gearing lost control of his car, which spun across the circuit, collected the Taylon 7 of Jeff Gable and rolled several times.

Both drivers emerged shaken but unharmed, with the roll cages and safety harnesses in their vehicles doing exactly what they were designed to do.

David Jermy (Birkin 7) went on to win the race.
