New design joins Mickey Thompson’s range of legendary rubber

An updated range of Mickey Thompson 4x4 tyres is available locally, and the star of the show is the brand new Deegan 38.

The name pays homage to ‘truck’ racing champion Brian Deegan, and the new tyre is designed to provide unrivalled grip and traction in the gloopy stuff – the kind of conditions where most tyres fill their tread pattern and the voids between the blocks with mud, making it as effective as a dragster’s slicks…

The product of a collaboration between Mickey Thompson’s research and development engineers and Deegan’s competition expertise, it is a serious off-road tyre – but one which has great street manners too.

Available in 15-, 16-, 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheel diameters, the tread boasts a proven compound plus a number of unique design elements: the large outer voids and bevelled tread edge enhances self-cleaning ability and lug integrity, while wide offset lateral grooves channel water and mud away from the tread.

Tighter-packed inner voids reduce noise levels and provide enhanced contact on tarmac.

Along the shoulder, Mickey Thompson’s (tread-on-the-sidewall) SideBiters and unique shoulder scallops keep excess mud off the tread.

The enhanced sidewall design includes high tensile body ply cord for increased integrity, reduced rolling resistance and minimal heat build-up.

The Deegan 38 is a perfect choice for the current generation of ‘heavyweight’ double cabs on the local market and also ideal for SUVs driven by people who are serious about having the right tyre for the conditions.

They come in sizes up to 37 inches in overall diameter, and in the P-metric sizing system they’re available in 305/70/16, 315/75/16, 305/65/17, 315/70/17 and 305/60/18 and 305/70/18.

The flagship of the range is a 305/55/20.Proudly made in the USA, refer to the brand’s website – www.mickeythompson.co.za – for the Deegan 38 sizes available locally.

Pricing starts from R4 230.

“We expect the Deegan to be a popular choice for those who want a specialised tyre which is still versatile enough to use year-round,” says Mike Harling, Mickey Thompson Brand Manager at South African agent, Automotive Technology Specialists (ATS).

“It has been exhaustively researched for maximum performance in wet and muddy conditions, but is more than able to hold its own on dry tarmac. It is pretty damn stylish too.”

In addition to the Deegan 38, ATS also stock the Power Ply trio of ATZp3, MTZ, and Claw TTC, and the Baja ATZ.
