There is one thing South Africans love more than a bakkie itself. A flashy bakkie. And the latest model to enter the flashy stakes is the Toyota Hilux 2.4GD-6 double cab 4×4 Raider X.

Based on the Toyota Hilux Raider 2.4 GD-6 4×4 double cab, the Raider X replaces the donor model for the time being as a limited edition. The Raider comes in automatic and manual guise. The Citizen Motoring recently sampled the latter for a week.

The Raider X features a host of exterior styling enhancements over its donor model.

Starting with the wheels, the limited edition features 17-inch, bi-tone, diamond-polished, chrome and black multi-spoke alloys. Matt black overfenders with red inserts complement the wheels.

The front grille features a chrome inset bar with Hilux badging, with a matt black styling bar and integrated tonneau cover featuring at the rear. The loadbin is rubberised and the tailgate spring-loaded for easier opening and closing.

The bakkie features unique Raider X badging on its front doors and tailgate.

Raider X badging continues inside the cabin between the gear lever and the driving mode buttons.

Familiar Toyota Hilux engine

Under the bonnet of the Toyota Hilux Raider X is the familiar four-cylinder 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine which produces 110kW of power and 400Nm of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the power goes to all fours via switchable four-wheel drive system.

Toyota claims this bakkie will achieve fuel consumption of 7.6 litres per 100km. We manage to get 8.8 L/100km, which is a very credible real world number.

What we liked about the Raider X is that it does well differentiating itself from siblings without being too loud. The Hilux has a reputation as a tireless worker. The Raider X will get the job with a tad more style.
