Mitsubishi D:X Concept debuts as futuristic new Delica preview

Teased via a pair of spy images over the past two months, Mitsubishi has officially debuted its mystery MPV at the Tokyo Mobility Show in the shape of the D:X Concept.

Delica from the future

Billed as a preview of what the next generation Delica could look like, the almost moon-buggy inspired D:X – its name denoting “discover” and “experience” – sports a thin box-like kei car design with chunky bumpers and door sills, front and rear skidplates, all-terrain tyres and illuminated inverted T-shaped LED strips that make up the headlights.

Sporting a backlite three diamond logo on a blacked-out front panel, the D:X’s rear facia comprises a single-piece glass rear hatch, with the illuminated logo separating the H-shaped LED lights running vertically down the side.

Fitted with flush door handles, access to the cabin comes via a sliding rear door and conventional opening front similar to the Delica, all without a B-pillar in a move reminiscent of the Renault Avantime.

New world inside

Described by Mitsubishi as making full use of the available interior space, the cabin provides seating for six in a 2-2-2 configuration, while incorporating a digitised design that makes extensive use of artificial intelligence (AI).

While still fitted with a steering wheel, the dashboard has been broken-up into separate sections with a transparent panel found on the passenger side, and a wraparound binnacle in front and around the driver.

Along with a sound system developed by Yamaha with a pair of speakers integrated into each seat’s headrest, the D:X also lacks side-view mirrors subtitled by a pair of cameras whose image is displayed inside the A-pillar.

PHEV and 4WD

Underneath, the undisclosed powertrain combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack for a plug-in hybrid configuration.

The latter being located on the rear axle means an effective electronic four-wheel-drive layout Mitsubishi claims “offers the superb road handling of an SUV” in addition to providing “pleasant, precise handling for drivers”.

Production plans unknown

“The Mitsubishi D:X Concept is a concept car that brings together the best of Mitsubishi Motors’ technologies – our electrification and all-wheel control technologies in particular – with a view to realising a carbon-neutral society,” Mitsubishi President and CEO, Takao Kato, said.

“We will continue to provide fulfilling mobility lifestyles that awaken the adventurous spirit of drivers and provide excitement for everyone on board”.

For now, the D:X remains a concept with plans of mass production being unknown.
