RGM makes new Volkswagen Golf a supercar
Techniflow exhaust, Power software are two of the key ingredients.
Owners of the new Golf 7.5 R, as it is known, are a demanding bunch it seems and within a few weeks of it being launched, two of them had dropped off their nearly-new cars at RGMotorsport’s Strydom Park headquarters for upgrades.
Such is the reputation of the company’s Golf 7 R guinea pig, with a number of hillclimb and dragstrip trophies to its name, that the range of Untamed conversion options, from mild to hot, offered by RGM for the all-wheeldrive VW has become a big hit.
Both 7.5 owners have opted for something towards the middle of the heat range and have been served a man-sized 270Kw/470Nm portion.
That’s a hefty increase from the standard 228kW and 380Nm that this hot hatch offers in standard trim from its 2.0-litre turbocharged mill.
Key ingredients are a 76mm Techniflow exhaust (Techniflow being RGM’s inhouse all-stainless steel TIG-welded outlet brand), RGM-Goliath carbon fibre cold air intake, Plug-in Power Software and a fabricated turbo downpipe.
“Our philosophy has always been to add performance withoutsacrificing driveability and reliability, so we always approach these cars with a carefully-planned research and development programme,” explains Rob Green, at the helm of RGMotorsport since founding it in 1992.
“Fortunately, we brought a Golf 7 R of our own when it first came onto the market and set out to make it one of the most radical roadgoing cars of its type. Now we’ve got the trophies and certificates to prove it.”
When RGM had finished, the two lucky new 7.5 R owners drove away in a supercar, cunningly disguised as a hatchback.
