Peugeot going all-electric come 2030

Peugeot has become the latest automaker to officially renounce support for the internal combustion engine after 2030, but only in Europe.

In a similar move to Stellantis stablemates DS (2026), Alfa Romeo (2027), Lancia (2027) and Opel/Vauxhall (2028), the Lion brand will become the fifth former PSA marque to head the electric route on the Old Continent with the only outstanding division being Citroën.

“As we move on to the new [Stellantis] platforms, STLA Small, Medium, Large, by 2030 in Europe all of our models will be electric,” Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson told Automotive News Europe.

She, however, added immediately after, “I still have to make sure I maintain internal-combustion offerings for my international customers.”

According to the report, 70% of the brand’s line-up in Europe has electrical assistance whether it be hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric with the only exceptions being 5008 and the soon-to-discontinued 108.

Come 2024, all its models will feature some sort of electrification with the next all-new model, the 3008, being electric only.

Preceding this though will be an electric version of the 308, which will ultimately spawn a plug-in only version of the new Opel Astra.

The electric switch will also bring to an end the various PSA-developed platforms as future models will be underpinned by four architectures designed solely to accommodate electric propulsion.

As mentioned by Jackson, they comprise STLA Small due in 2026, STLA Medium in 2023, SLTA Large also in 2023 and STLA Frame in 2024.

With a range of 500 km, the former will serve as base for the next generation A, B and C-segment cars, while STLA Medium will underpin C and D-segment models and offer a range of 700 km.

The STLA Large will cater for D and E-segment models with a range of 800 km, while STLA Frame will solely be used for commercial vehicles, SUVs and bakkies with a range of 800 km as well.

In terms of outputs, all STLA Small models will have a battery capable of producing between 37 kWh and 82 kWh, while those for STLA Medium will vary from 87 kWh to 104 kWh.

On STLA Large models, expected outputs will range from 101 kWh to 118 kWh and from 159 kWh to over 200 kWh on STLA Frame vehicles.

A more detailed breakdown is only expected come once the platforms enter service in less than two years’ time.
