Our long-term VW Golf GTD goes clubbing
It’s performed flawlessly in the 2 500km it’s covered so far in the daily work grind.
Part two of our time with our long-term VW Golf GTD is all about being able to fully enjoy and make use of this performance hatch in the perfect environment.
And that, in my humble opinion, is amongst VW enthusiasts, doing VW things.
So, I have signed the car and myself up with the Volkswagen Club of SA.
The club was founded way back in 1983, and is one of the oldest, most respected single marque car clubs in the country.
Despite their already mentioned love for the VW brand, they also host monthly events that involve everything from social get-togethers to track days at the various tracks in and around Gauteng.
Some fun is going to be had with our Golf GTD, but in a controlled and civilised environment, because being a properly constituted and recognised car club, the Volkswagen Club of South Africa is not involved in, nor does it condone, any type of illegal street racing.
Besides the safe, fun factor the club offers, paid up members are entitled to discounted (or sometimes free) and preferential entry to all of their official VWCSA events for the year.
You also get access to their official clubhouse in Edenvale, that was built by VW aftermarket and tuning specialists, Oettinger South Africa.
Enrolment in the club costs only R300 per annum, and members receive a membership pack which includes a t-shirt and club decals.
Renewals are R250 thereafter, and you receive a new membership pack every time you renew.
Obviously, our VW GTD has performed flawlessly in the 2 500km it has covered so far in the daily work and back grind, so I am looking forward to stretching its legs a little and making full use of the 130kW and 350Nm on tap from its EA288, 2.0-litre turbo diesel powerplant.
The VW Golf GTD retails from R509 400 and comes standard with a five-year/90 000km Service Plan, three year/120 000km warranty and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
Service Intervals are set at 15 000km.
