New terrain to test off-road racing crews to the full

The first shots in this year’s series were fired on the recent RFS 450 which was moved from Tarlton International Raceway, near Krugersdorp, to Harrismith in the Free State.

Now the Toyota Dealer event, after hopping between Richmond and Eston in recent seasons, switches to Mooi River.

“Taking races to new areas in South Africa spreads the cross-country message to a broader audience,” said SANORA CEO Richard Schilling.

“The RFS 450 was well received in Harrismith and was given a firm thumbs up by the competitors.

“There is also a major financial spin-off for areas in which races are held, and we are looking forward to another successful weekend in Mooi River.”

Race headquarters, the start/finish and the designated service park will all be located at the Weston Agricultural College on the outskirts of Mooi River on the old Greytown Road.

The route, however, could provide competitors with more unexpected challenges than the well received RFS 450 course did.

“There has been a lot of rain in the area, and more is expected before the race,” said route director Adri Roets.

“The route is wet and overgrown and more rain will make the river and ravine crossings interesting for both competitors and cross-country enthusiasts.

“The route criss-crosses the R622 to Greytown and sections along rocky terrain and in forest areas are very technical. Crews are in for a busy weekend.”

The 100-kilometre qualifying event to determine race grid positions will start at 11.30am on Friday, April 4.

The race will start at 8.30am on Saturday, April 5, and will be run over two loops of 175-kilometres with a compulsory 15 minute halt at the end of the first lap.

Public entry to race headquarters, the start/finish and the designated service park at Weston Agricultural College and spectator vantage points along the route will be free of charge.
