Bikes to growl at Classic Car Show

Bikers are about to shake up the genteel, placid world of the Classic Car movement at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, on December 7, 2014.

“The mix of motorcycles, classic cars, street rods and modified street machines is all part of the natural movement we call Petrol-Head-Onism,” says Paulo Calisto, organiser of Gauteng’s biggest classic car show.

“For our final event in 2014, we are inviting bikers in their hundreds to show up and party, drool over the classic and custom sheet-metal, and let the car guys marvel at the naked technology of the modern Superbikes, the glamour of Harley Davidsons and other custom cruisers, and of course the purity of the classic motorcycles of yesteryear.

“We have extended invitations to the major motor motorcycle clubs, as well as the Vintage Motorcycle Club and the Classic Motorcycle Club to come and join in the fun,” says Calisto, who has seen his brainchild, The Classic Car Show grow to be the biggest draw-card for classic machinery since he first organised a modest parking-lot event in Johannesburg three years ago, that drew over 300 vehicles.

“We have over 100 vendors who will be displaying their motor-related wares. And as in the past, we will offer helicopter rides at R150 per person, plenty of food and beverage vendors, and a special entertainment area for children.”

The mix of classic cars, motorcycles, hot-rods, muscle cars and modified street machines is unique in the Gauteng region, and Calisto believes this will set the trend for future shows.

“There is something special about all the cars and bikes that come to our events. In July we had over 1 000 cars and many thousands of paying spectators who are intrigued about the movement. We will also be catering to owners of modern motorcycles, cruisers of the Harley and Indian variety as well as the latest superbikes.

“It’s all about checking out each other’s toys. The secret of these shows is the common passion that exists amongst all petrol-heads, and it’s a great way to meet new people, make new friends. And if you are new to the movement, watch out! Once the bug bites you may end up owning a classic car or bike sooner than you think. It’s all part of a global movement that is sweeping the planet.”
