Mitsubishi debuting six new models in 2023

Mitsubishi has detailed its product outlook for the remainder of 2023 by confirming the launch of six new models before year-end.

Part of its Challenge 2025 strategy announced in March, the roll-out had already commenced with the debut earlier this year of the Japanese-only market Delica Mini kei car and more recently, the European-only ASX based on the Renault Captur.

Colt and Triton next

Due on 8 June, the Colt will make a comeback after a decade’s hiatus based on the newly facelift Renault Clio, followed at some stage by a new hybrid electric vehicle believed to be an electrified version of the Xpander MPV.

Arguably the biggest highlight is the next generation Triton bakkie previewed as the disguised XRT Concept at the Bangkok International Motor Show in March.

Set to once again carry the L200 moniker in select markets, the product slide released by Mitsubishi earlier today, names the XRT as the Triton that will provide the base for the next Nissan Navara as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s “leader-follower” strategy announced three years ago.

While details pertaining to the Triton are also still unknown, speculation alleges it being powered by an updated version of the 2.4 DI-D turbodiesel engine called 4N16 that premiered in the Japanese-market Nissan NV350 Caravan last year.

Paired to a brand-new seven-speed automatic gearbox that replaces the six-speed unit in the current Triton, the development of the present 4N15 engine is anticipated to produce more than the model in question’s 133kW/430Nm, though as indicated, nothing has been confirmed outright.

XFC the true “new ASX”?

The final new product out of an eventual 16 Mitsubishi will unveil before 2030, the majority being hybrids or fully electric vehicles, is the production version of the XFC Concept that premiered in October last year as the likely preview of the ASX’s real replacement outside of Europe.

A model Mitsubishi didn’t disclose many details of, the XFC has, however, been lined-up for ASEAN market and also African countries, which could well include South Africa should approval be given.

Expect more details soon

With the Colt tipped to premiere next on account of both the ASX and Delica Mini having been unveiled as mentioned, expect Mitsubishi to make more details available of the still to be launched models throughout the rest of the year until their eventual unveilings.
