Works meet leisure as Mitsubishi prices ‘limited-run’ Triton GLX

Based on the step-down GL, the newest derivative of the outgoing Triton receives aesthetics extras worth R10 000.

Mitsubishi has continued the run-out of the current generation Triton with the addition of another special derivative in less than two months.

No power spike

Following the introduction of the returning Athlete in August, the GLX enters the range as a step-up from the GL Mitsubishi describes as being more of a leisure focused workhorse model.

Similar to the GL, the GLX is only available as a double cab with a six-speed manual gearbox directing the 2.4 DI-D turbodiesel engine’s 100kW/324Nm to the rear wheels only. Claimed fuel consumption is eight-litres per 100 km.

More for little

The GLX’s main difference though centres around its exterior receiving a number of aesthetic add-ons not available as standard on the GL.

This includes a black finish for the Dynamic Shield grille, black door handles, a standard tow bar, nudge bar, tailgate lock and, sourced from long-time supplier, Keko, a sports bar and tonneau cover.

Inside, the standard audio system has been replaced by a seven-inch Sony touchscreen infotainment system with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ordinarily available as an option on the GL.

Spec

As for standard features, the GLX, bar the display, retains the same items as the GL, namely the 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, all-around electric windows, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, automatic air-conditioning, fabric seats, electric mirrors, side-steps and central locking.

Despite the inclusion of the tow bar, the GLX continues to make do without the rear bumper available on the step-up unbadged model, the Athlete, Heritage Edition and off-road focused Xtreme.

Price

Likely to be one of a number of special editions to be rolled-out within the coming months, ahead of the local market debut of the all-new Triton next year, the GLX’s extras carries a price premium of R10 000 over the GL for a final sticker of R529 900.

As with the rest of the Triton range, this includes a three-year/100 000 km warranty as well as a five-year/90 000 km service plan.
