Having rolled out three of its five new generation CX models over the last 12 months, Mazda South Africa has officially disclosed price and spec details for the model that set the lineage into battle, the new CX-60.

Besides debuting as not only the first model to premiere Mazda’s new rear-wheel-drive platform in South Africa, the CX-60 also displaces the CX-5 as Hiroshima’s new flagship SUV until it decides whether to bring the recently revealed CX-90 to the local market.

Dimensions

In addition to the BT-50 bakkie, the CX-60 also ranks as the most expensive, but also technologically focused Mazda on-sale in South Africa today.

Incorporating the latest Kodo design language called “Noble Toughness”, the CX-60 measures 4 745 mm long, 2 134 mm wide and 1 688 mm tall while riding on a wheelbase stretching 2 870 mm.

Similar to the model sold in Europe, and indeed also the North America-only market CX-50, the CX-60 provides seating for five, two less than the CX-90, with claimed boot space from 570-litres to 1 148-litres with the 60/40 split rear back folded forward.

One engine only

On the model front, Mazda has availed two trim levels for the CX-60, Dynamic and Individual, with the former being rear-wheel-drive only and the latter solely equipped with all-wheel-drive.

More than likely as a result of South Africa’s fuel quality, Mazda has opted against bringing either of its new 3.3-litre straight-six engines to the market, with the same applying to the plug-in hybrid that combines a 17.8-kWh battery with the 2.5 litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine.

Instead, the sole powerunit available is the mentioned 2.5, but without any mild-hybrid assistance or indeed turbocharging as featured on the CX-5 and CX-9 sold in Australia and United States.

Hooked to another Mazda South Africa first, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the unit develops 141kW/261Nm and propels the rear-wheel-drive Dynamic from 0-100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 203 km/h.

Comparatively, the all-wheel-drive Individual takes 0.3 seconds longer to reach 100km/h before running out of puff at 201km/h.

Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 7.3 L/100 km for the former and 7.7 L/100 km, with both sporting a braked trailer towing capacity of 1 500 kg as well as the Kinetic Posture Control suspension Mazda says “promotes intuitive cornering and excellent stability”.

In addition, both Dynamic and Individual come standard with a drive mode selector, which offers two settings in the former; Normal and Sport. On the all-paw gripped latter, an Off-Road mode has been included, along with a tow function.

Despite both models being mounted on 20-inch alloy wheels, differences also prevail in the claimed ground clearance, namely 179 mm for the Dynamic and 178 mm for the Individual.

As for specification, Mazda has left little to chance as both CX-60 derivatives are equipped with the following as standard:
