Soon to arrive in South Africa, Land Rover has showcased two new derivatives of the Defender 130, as well as reviving the iconic County designation for a new appearance package option on the Defender 110.
Defender 130 Outbound
The result of customer demand seeking an adventure focused model, the appropriately named Outbound, which Solihull calls its most luxurious model to date, uses the conventional five-seat Defender 130 as a base, but with a series of unique exterior and interior revisions.

Besides the carryover Terrain Response 2 system, adaptive dynamics and air suspension, Land Rover has kitted the Outbound out with gloss black 20-inch or Shadow Atlas Mist 22-inch alloy wheels, body coloured D-pillar, Shadow Atlas Matte bumpers, anthracite side vents, Shadow Atlas Matte detailing on the grille and a choice of four colours; Fuji White, Eiger Grey, Santorini Black and Carpathian Grey.
With the five seats in place, the Defender 130 Outbound’s boot accommodates between 1 329-litres and 2 516-litres, and while unchanged from the standard Defender 90 and Defender 110 on the design front, receives specific touches no other versions have.
These include an Ebony Morzine roofliner, satin black powder coated accents, Windsor leather or fabric seat upholstery and rubber floor mats expanded to the boot floor. A new cargo net designed to keep outdoor equipment in-place completes the interior.
In South Africa, the Defender 130 Outbound will only be available in P400 guise, meaning outputs of 294kW/550Nm from the Ingenium 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine.
Defender 130 V8
With the announcement last month that Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) will keep its stalwart 5.0-litre AJ-V8 supercharged engine in production until after 2025, the Defender 130 now joins the 90 and 110 in being the recipient of the forced-assisted bent-eight that also does duty in the F-Type and F-Pace SVR.
Hooked to the familiar to the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox, the V8, which can trace its roots back to 1996, produces 386kW/625Nm and according to Land Rover, will propel the Defender 130 V8 from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.
Solely available in eight-seat guise, the V8’s exterior alterations from the HSE on which it is based comprises standard Matrix LED headlights, satin dark grey 22-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust outlets and Carpathian Grey or Santorini Black colours options.
Standard specification items is a panoramic sunroof, electric, heated and cooled front seats finished in Ebony Windsor leather and man-made suede cloth, quad-zone climate control, a suede heated steering wheel, Ebony Morzine roofline, heated and cooled second row, Head-Up Display, the upgraded Meridian sound system, a wireless smartphone charger and JLR’s 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system with over-the-air-updates, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
County returns
The final addition, the County, returns after a prolonged hiatus following its demise when the last generation Defender left production in 2016.
In South Africa, the add-on will only be availed to the Defender 110 SE and consists of County side graphics, 20-inch alloy wheels, illuminated door sills and three contrasting body colours:
- Tasman Blue with a white roof and tailgate, plus Fuji White decals.
- Fuji White with a Tasman Blue roof and tailgate, plus Tasman Blue decals.
- Santorini Black also with a Tasman Blue roof, tailgate and decals.
Inside, the Defender 110 Country’s interior boasts the robustic veneer option, white or light grey cross beam inserts and fabric, grained leather or Windsor leather seats.
Not specified though was the engine options, but as a result of being based on the SE, expect two options; the 177kW/500Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel in the D240 and the 221kW/650Nm 3.0-litre straight-six oil-burner that motivates the D300.
When?
Despite no pricing details pertaining to the Outland, V8 or County pack being made, Land Rover South Africa did confirm all three will become reality towards the end of this year.
