Fast, faster, Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS
Rocket of a 911 will get you jailed before you're even in third gear.
The new record holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS
I have been doing dedicated performance road testing for almost 20 years now. I have seen fast cars come and go, but nothing has gone as quick as Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS. And here is the data to prove it…
No car supplied by an OEM, that I have tested, has done a 0 to 100 km/h time in the sub three-second bracket. No GT-R, no AMG, no Ferrari, no other Porsche, no matter the claim or the car, this has remained unconquered territory. Until now that is!
Porsche 911 GT2 RS the new record holder
Porsche’s previous gen all-wheel drive 911 Turbo S was the long-time leader with a time of 3.21 seconds, but recently BMW’s all-wheel drive M8 Coupe Competition wrestled the title away from the 911 with a time of 3.13 seconds. But last week, Porsche’s rear wheel drive GT2 RS smashed into the two’s with a time of 2.85 sec to hit 100 km/h, and the records did not stop tumbling there.
This off the showroom floor, warranty and full maintenance plan backed, 515kW/750Nm super car weighing in at a mere 1 470 kg, that runs on the good ol’ 95 octane pump fuel from your local garage smashed through the 200 km/h mark in 8.51 sec, the 400 m in 10.48 sec at 221 km/h, the 800m in 16.32 sec at 268 km/h and blitzed the 1 km mark at 283 km/h.

If those numbers don’t mean too much to you, then let me try this. Pulling off from a traffic light in a built-up area will see you jailed for speeding before the car has finished pulling through second gear, and quicker than it took you to read this sentence. Be brave enough, or dumb enough, to keep it pinned in the time it takes the average hot hatch to hit 100 km/h, you will be doing 200 km/h.
If you are truly in love with prison food, or are a touch suicidal, by the time you enter the highway after coming on at the average on-ramp, you will somewhere around 300 km/h, and on your way to a 340 km/h top speed.
Making irresponsible use of the abilities of this car will see you thrown in jail faster than playing a game of Monopoly. Take it from me, start saving those “Get out of Jail Free” cards now if you do.
Speed with feeling
But speed in a straight line is just one part of the ownership experience with a special car like this. It’s the sheer excitement you will feel when you turn the key and the 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six barks into life. And once the massive Michelin Pilot Super Cup 2R have a bit of heat of them in them, it becomes an adrenalin overload experience of the highest order.
You are greeted by red Alcantara and black leather and plenty of carbon weave as you slide into the car and hunker down into the full race bucket seats. In front of you is clear instrumentation and a sports steering wheel that doesn’t offer you any sort of distracting buttons.
Porsche’s Communication Management (PCM) is the central point for the audio, navigation and any other very unnecessary communication needs you might have. I don’t think I even switched it on, and good luck even trying to adjust the volume on the radio once on the move in the GT2 RS.
This is not a car for pretenders, this is a hardcore race car for the road, and your Martini will always arrive a little more shaken than stirred, but it will get there first that’s for sure.
To add to the appeal of the motoring nirvana that is a GT2 RS, our test car came with the optional Weissach package, which saves around 30 kg in weight and gives you a roof and anti-roll bars made from of carbon, magnesium wheels, and a central stripe that is the same colour as the car to let the aficionados know what is lurking within your 911.
Conclusion
Now before you point out that your friend has a friend who has a Mk 1 Golf from Boksburg that makes 743 kW on the wheels and smokes Porsche 911’s every Thursday night at the drags, allow me to add that this is a from the OEM stock standard production car title.
And if you say that McLaren, Ferrari, Bugatti or whoever make faster cars, again allow me to add that this title exists from cars we have been given the privilege of testing. Until we are offered one of their ”Porsche killers” to test, this 911 GT2 RS is King of Time Sheets.
