Tech and spec starting at under R450k as Chery prices Omoda C5

Having last month provided the official in-the-metal teaser of what to expect from its Omoda brand’s new coupe-styled C5, Chery has officially released price and spec details of its rival for the Volkswagen Taigo.

The first Omoda model South Africa will get as three others are currently in the development phase, the C3, C7 and C9, the C5 will eventually be sold on its own as part of Chery’s ultimate view of having both marques operate separately.

For now though, the Omoda C5 will be sold from select dealers principally located in the metro areas of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

What is it?

First shown at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2020, before being exhibited at the Kyalami Festival of Motoring last year, the Omoda C5 measures 4 440 mm long, 1 830 mm wide and 1 590 mm tall while riding on a 2 630 mm long wheelbase.

Based on Chery’s T1X platform that also underpins the Tiggo 4 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro, the futuristically styled Omoda comes in three levels; Tech, Elegance and Elegance S, all powered by an uprated version of the familiar 1.5 T-GDI petrol engine.

Despite being offered in China with a more powerful 1.6 T-GDI and indeed the 2.0 T-GDI from the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, Chery has extracted a smidgen more and power from the mill for a total output of 115kW/230Nm.

An uptake of two kilowatts and 20 Nm over the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro, the mill is mated solely to a CVT that delivers the amount of twist to the front wheels. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.9 L/100 km.

Spec

On the mentioned spec front, and typical Chery fashion, all three Omoda C5 variants are extensively stocked, with the following items being standard on the Tech:

• cruise control

On top this, the Elegance swaps the 17-inch wheel for 18-inch alloys, in addition to receiving leather instead of vinyl seat upholstery, heated mirrors, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, heated, ventilated and electric front seats, an electric tailgate, sunroof and expanded ambient lighting.

A more comprehensive array of safety and driver assistance systems also feature, namely Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Keep Assist.

Rounding the range off, the Elegance S becomes the recipient of a so-called styling package that mainly comprises red interior accents. Like Elegance sibling, the ‘S’ can also be specified in a two-tone exterior hue.

Colours

The colours vary, with Khaki White and Carbon Crystal Black being available on three models, while Phantom Grey and Aerial Silver are restricted to the Tech and Elegance S.

Exclusive to the Tech and Elegance though are Dark Blue, Light Green and Vanilla Blue, with the two-tone options seeing the Light Green receiving a contrasting Khaki White roof, albeit only on the Elegance.

On the Elegance S, the options are Aerial Silver and Khaki White with a Carbon Crystal Black roof, as well as the mentioned red accents.

Price

Included in each Omoda C5’s price is a five-year/150 000 km warranty, a five-year/70 000 km service plan and Chery’s ground-breaking 10-year/1 000 000 km engine warranty.
