Dramatic Chery Omoda 5 approved for South Africa
Coupe-styled crossover SUV will touchdown in late 2022.
The front and overall design has been compared to that of the all-electric Nissan Ariya.
Its South African operations now fully back on track, Chery has confirmed availability from next year of its brand-new coupe-styled Omoda 5 crossover.
Shown for the first time at the Guangzhou Auto Show last month, the Omoda 5 represents a departure for the Chinese brand at it debuts a completely new styling language called Art in Motion.
Reportedly taking its name from the Latin terms for “brand-new” and “fashion”, the Omoda 5 features an expansive honeycomb pattern grille with no surround, as well as a split LED headlight design with those at the top sporting a T-shape design similar to Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer.
Aside from the lowered roofline, the rear facia borrows from the Audi Q8, DS4 and Toyota Harrier/Venza in look and design, while the interior is completely different from Chery’s current model line-up.

Taking centre stage is a new dual 10.25-inch digital instrument and infotainment display seemingly inspired by the setups of the Opel Astra and BMW iX, while the centre console sports further elements from Munich on first glance.
Measuring 4 400 mm in overall length, the Omoda 5 has a wheelbase of 2 630 mm, height of 1 585 mm and width of 1 830 mm with power, in China, set to come from the brand’s in-house developed 1.6 T-GDI petrol engine.
Said to produce 145kW/290Nm, the engine is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with drive going to the front wheels only.
For now, specification and price remains unknown, but expect more to be divulged leading-up to the Omoda 5’s South African reveal late next year.
