10 Mzansi celebs who’ve been caught speeding

News about the arrest of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s driver caused a stir on social media on Monday and continued as a trending topic on Tuesday.

According to Free State traffic police spokesperson Hillary Mophethe the vehicle Malema was travelling in clocked a speed of 187km per hour in a 120 zone. To make it even more interesting, the driver allegedly tried to flee the cops, going on the run for 100km.

Malema had been caught speeding before, in the Vaal area, back in 2013. Traffic officers captured three separate readings of him travelling at between 190 km/h and 215km/h in a 120km/h zone.

But we know the EFF leader is not the only politician who was caught in the fast lane … here are some of the other well-known Mzansi names who like to get to where they’re going fast, even if they may not have realised that destination was an overnight stay in a police holding cell.

Dan Kgothule

The Free State MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation was caught driving 235km/h on December 30 2010 on the N1 highway outside Bloemfontein, breaking provincial records.

Steve Hofmeyr

Hofmeyr was arrested on the N4 eastbound for allegedly speeding in the Bronkhorstspruit area while rushing to a concert at the Badplaas resort.

Police officers on the scene claimed Hofmeyr reached speeds of almost 170km/h in an 80km/h zone in his black Chrysler.

Gareth Cliff

Cliff was arrested in 2012 after apparently driving at 182km/h in a 120km/h zone in Lyttleton, Pretoria, returning from filming part of the Idols reality show in Durban.

DJ Sbu

Back in December 2007, the radio personality, whose real name is Sbusiso Leope, was arrested after driving a sponsored Audi TT at 257km/h.

DJ Fresh

Another 5FM favourite, DJ Fresh, real name Thato Sikwane, was caught in 2009 driving a Volkswagen Touareg at 161km/h on the N1 south in Johannesburg, a 120km/h zone.

Lolly Jackson

The now deceased strip-club franchise owner was fined R20 000 for driving at 249km/h in his Lamborghini in July 2005.

Kerishnie Naicker

.

The former Miss SA was caught driving at 190km/h on a KwaZulu-Natal highway in her official car, with an expired licence to boot, in 1999.

Zwelinzima Vavi

Vavi was allegedly speeding on October 4, 2015, on the R24 in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.

Evidence from one of the traffic officers who apprehended Vavi was that his silver-grey Audi Q7 was travelling at 178km/h in a 120km/h zone.

The officer alleged that his speed increased to 182km/h as Vavi changed lanes.

DJ Tira

The popular DJ, real name Mthokozisi Khathi, was arrested in May 2011 for driving at 170km/h on the N1 North Highway in the Midrand area.

Itumeleng Khune

The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper faced charges of reckless and negligent driving after being caught driving at 173km/h in a 120km/h zone in January.
