Caravan wars begin

Caravan demolition racing will return to the Pretoria Mahem Raceway this Saturday evening, with at least a dozen of the vehicles being towed to ruthless slaughter by uncaring stock car drivers.

The demolition derby will end a full programme of racing at Mahem, scheduled to start at 5pm. The gates will be open from 11am, with all of the events participating categories getting chances to test during the afternoon.

There will be races for V8 Sprint Cars, Pinto Saloon Cars, Stock Rods, 1660cc Modified Saloons, the Open Class, Ninja Midget Karts and Rookies. When all is done, the stock car brigade will take to the tarmac with the caravans and open warfare will ensue.

Basically, caravan racing has no rules – competitors are not allowed to drive against the stream of traffic, but that is all. It should get pretty busy out there, with pieces flying until only one car and part of caravan is left running, to be declared the winner.

One of the drivers will be MalJan from Radio Jacaranda, who will also take the wheel of a Pinto Class car earlier in the night. Admission will cost R60 per adult, R30 for kids and kids under the age of seven will get in for free.

Food and drinks will be on sale, or you may bring your own. Parking is free and patrolled.
