South Africa can be a dangerous place at the best of times and this is our third story on armoured vehicles in recent weeks.

It speaks volumes about what high net worth individuals are going through in trying to stay safe, or maybe what bad people are having to do to stay alive. We are in no way saying the person involved in this shooting is in anyway doing anything they shouldn’t, but this is a real-world demonstration of the life-saving power of vehicle armouring.

One of Armoured Mobility’s clients survived an apparent assassination attempt after their Toyota Fortuner sustained more than 40 high-calibre rifle shots without a single bullet penetrating the vehicle. The incident is a chilling reminder of the country’s growing security threats. Yet at the same time a powerful testament to the build quality of Armoured Mobility’s premium discreet bulletproof vehicles.

Toyota Fortuner saves the day

The attack, which occurred during an ambush, targeted a B6-level armoured Toyota Fortuner. Gunmen opened fire at close range, concentrating on the passenger side before continuing to fire as the driver fled. Though the tyres were damaged during the attack, Armoured Mobility’s steel band run-flat system allowed the client to drive to safety.

“We are grateful our client is safe and proud that our technology did exactly what it was designed to do, save lives,” said Nabeel Khan, general manager of Armoured Mobility.

“This is exactly why we do what we do. Our vehicles are not just built for discretion, comfort or luxury, they are built to save lives. And in this case, it did just that.”

Hijackings on the rise

Shaken, but completely uninjured, the client has expressed immense gratitude. While the details of the client and the location of the attack on the Toyota Fortuner remain confidential for security reasons, what is clear is that the armour stood the ultimate test in a real-life crisis.

This incident comes amid a surge in violent vehicle-related crime. According to Tracker’s latest statistics, 56% of all vehicle crime in South Africa are now hijackings. The numbers are alarming and affect many South Africans as more families are at risk on the road each day.

“This isn’t just about protecting VIPs any more,” added Khan. “It’s about mothers doing school runs, professionals commuting to work and families who want peace of mind.”
