Mitsubishi ASX replacement only due in 2023

Currently one of Mitsubishi’s most popular global models, but also one of the most dated, the replacement for the now eleven year old ASX will reportedly only arrive in 2023.

Known in Japan as the RVR, but as the Outlander Sport in North America, the announcement to Czech website, auto.cz, by Mitsubishi’s PR manager for the region, Marek Vodička, comes on the back of the model’s removal from the brand’s online configurator after production allegedly came to an end last year.

With dealer stocks also depleted, Vodička, when asked by the publication if a new ASX is planned, stated “we already know that the new ASX will appear in early 2023”.

Although nothing else about the newcomer prevails at presents, the publication claims it could potentially become one of the two all-new models alliance partner, Renault, will be manufacturing from said year.

This comes after the French marque announced in March this year that will produce a pair of models for its Japanese sibling as part of the “leader-follower” strategy announced at its brand restructuring conference two years ago.

At present, it is rumoured that the ASX could ride on a development of the same platform as the Clio and Captur, though no confirmation exists at present. Currently, Mitsubishi’s only Renault derived model is the Express van marketed in Australasia as a rebadged version of the Trafic.

Production is expected to take place in France instead of Japan where global models are sourced from, with sales set for selected European markets as well as Africa, Australia and the United States.

Having already undergone three facelifts, the most recent being the inclusion of a new 2.4-litre petrol engine two years ago, the ASX placed third behind the top-selling Outlander and second-tier Triton with global sales last year of 99 000 units.

Despite its launch being less than two years away, expect details to become apparent heading into 2022.
