Daredevils set new fire tunnel record (video)

Daredevils Enrico Schoeman and The Citizen's own Andre de Kock successfully managed to navigate a 120 metre fire tunnel on Friday.

The duo currently hold the Guinness World Record of 103 metres.

They performed the stunt at this year’s Rhino Rally in Parys on Friday, 5 September. While official confirmation is still needed to see if Guinness will accept the record, the attempt was all but easy.

“That man knows how to drive a motorcycle,” a slightly toasty De Kock said after the stunt. He explained that the motorcycle had gone sideways inside the tunnel as its wheels slipped on something. Nevertheless, Schoeman managed to straighten the machine out.

The air inside the burning tunnel is superheated and should anything had gone wrong, there would have been little chance for the firefighters to intervene.

The structure’s skeleton was made from steel with cardboard wrapped along the sides. It was soaked in diesel and petrol and set alight. The entire tunnel had to be on fire while the duo drove through for the record attempt to be recognised.

De Kock said the footage and supporting documents will be jetted of to England for verification and he hopes to have the new record ratified in the next two weeks.
