2021 was an interesting year on the South African motoring landscape.

Some things changed, like an acceleration towards greener cars, while others stayed the same like Toyota topping the monthly sales charts.

In this series of 2021 Motoring Newsmakers, The Citizen looks back at the top 20 most popular online stories of the year. The series is dominated by South Africa’s most popular body style, bakkies, while the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 was by far the most viewed single model on our website. Other local favourites in the form of hot hatches, fuel efficient hatchbacks, big, mean SUVs, compact SUVs, Mercedes-AMGs and BMW M cars also drew their fair share of attention.

The global reveal of the all-new Ford Ranger was met with great expectation in November. The latest version of the Blue Oval’s bakkie resembles the very American F-150 at the front, while it also offers a technologically advanced vertical infotainment system.

Despite the announcement of new Ford Ranger the engine line-up which will include a V6 offering, no other output data where released. There have also not been confirmation of the local price or launch date of the new Ford Ranger. Production at the Silverton Assemble Plant will start early in the new year with availability only expected to be in the second half of 2022.

An interesting addition to the body of the new Ranger are the side steps behind the rear mudguards as suggested by customers. Reminiscent of the side steps that use to feature on the side of the Bantam, these side wells ease access to the loadbin.
