Powerball: Here’s how to spend the year-end R60 million jackpot

Buying a house in Italy for €1

There’s always the option of buying a villa in Italy for €1 – R17.85 at the time of publishing – but there’s a caveat: The Italian government would expect to renovate the place within three years.

The going rate for renovations in Italy seems to be €500 per square meter. I’ve had my eye on this one beauty, a 109 square meter house fixer-upper; meaning I’d have to fork out just under a million.

As per the listing, the house is located Cortile Catabba Street – an “inner hilly area” in Mussomeli, a city in the heart of Sicily, east of the Platani River.

Buy an island

You could always buy an island. Ironically, a small island is cheaper than some houses in Sandton. Blowfish Island, for example, is currently on the market for $79,000 (R1 252 395,69).

This six-acre undeveloped mangrove island is located near Punta Tigre in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, Panama. The closest town, Bocas del Toro, is 27 kilometres away.

The current owners say it’s perfect for a dream vacation home “on the hard ground or over the water”. It could also offer a “great rental income opportunity if several cabins are built over the water.”

How to be a millionaire

All you have to do is purchase your tickets from participating Lotto retailers, the National lottery website, or using the National Lottery Mobile App

You can also get a ticket from participating banks – FNB, ABSA, Nedbank, and Standard Bank – or via USSD. Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza said they are “excited to have come this far in our journey”.

While the lottery operator congratulates “all the multi-millionaires that have won jackpots this year”, they hope to have the opportunity to create many more.

Winners who receive winnings of R50 000 or more will receive trauma counselling, followed by extensive financial advice to assist them with their financial planning.
