Uproar over Giyani: Land of Blood’s ‘untimely’ end

It will be replaced by another telenovela in January.

South Africans have taken to social media to voice their anger after the South African Broadcasting Corporation announced on Monday that Tsonga telenovela had reached its end on SABC2.

“Dear @GiyaniSABC2 viewers: #GiyaniLandOfBlood is coming to an end on 26 November 2019. As with any telenovela, it was due to end after some time.”

It will be replaced by new telenovela, Lithapo, scheduled to grace our screens in January next year.

While cast member Fumani Shilubana has thanked the SABC for airing his show, viewers are not impressed.

According to Shilubana, the second season of the telenovela has not been confirmed yet.

An online petition has already being started, with the intention to keep the telenovela on our screens.

It reads: “The drama has stolen a heart of multitudes of South African’s whereby it even teach other tribes the ways of the Tsonga,  Venda, Mapedi and Balobedu speaking people culture and their daily challenges. It has find a way to teach us to unite and acknowledge our differences as tribes. It is said that it is going to be replaced with a Pedi telenovela, however, what we stand for is rather they keep them both on different time slots as we are all about embracing the languages of each tribe.

“By removing this Tsonga drama with a Pedi drama [sic] it will cause some controversy. In which we believe introducing a Sepedi is good, however, SABC has hosted a lot of Sepedi dramas for years and this is the only time where Xitsonga drama has been visualised.”

The telenovela has been trending since, with most calling on the broadcaster to keep the show.
