Mkokstad: Winning is not a miracle

Young gospel singer Dumi Mkokstad was the winner of the much-coveted Best Gospel Song award at the sixth annual Crown Gospel Awards.

At just 23 years of age, Mkokstad has released an impressive eight albums, and it’s for the track Mbize off his latest album, Mbize uJehova, that he won the big award of the evening.

Mkokstad, whose real name is Mdumiseni Nzimande, had to unfortunately hear that his gogo had fallen ill just prior to the event over the weekend though, but he is thrilled by his victory and hopes she’ll get better.

“I feel great, and so excited,” the singer said to SunBuzz after his win.

“I haven’t called my family to check on my gogo but I’m praying that she will be okay.”

Of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making his new album, he added: “I had to drop everything that I was doing. This is not a miracle but it’s prayer and persistence that brought me where I am today.”

Other big winners of the evening included Andile ka Majola, who walked away with both the Best Gospel Music Video and Best Songwriter awards, and Winnie Mashaba, who was named Best Gospel Artist.
