Chauke honoured with awards category

Legendary Xitsonga singer Thomas Chauke was over the weekend honoured with a special award at the Munghana Lonene FM Awards ceremony, which has also renamed one of its categories after him.

The Sowetan reports that Chauke received a special award for his contribution to music from Munghana Lonene FM manager James Shikwambane, who also announced that “from next year the Artist of the Year category will be known as the Dr Thomas Chauke Award”.

With more than thirty albums and a multitude of awards under his belt, Chauke this year won the SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award, and the University of Venda has also bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctorate.

Upon accepting the award in Tzaneen, Chauke paid homage to his father Sixpence.

He said: “I wish he were still alive to see what I have achieved.”
