Nick Minaj scores first No 1 song with ‘Say So (Remix)’

The rapper has often been vocal about her frustration with the charts, as testified by the lyrics of 2017's 'No Frauds'.

US singer Doja Cat collaborated with rapper Nicki Minaj for a remix of her chart-topping “Say So”, whose original version appeared on her sophomore studio album Hot Pink.

“Say So (Remix)” has now reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, edging out Megan Thee Stallion’s surprise remix of “Savage” featuring Beyoncé in the process.

“Can’t thank you guys enough for going so hard this past week to help us make history. I saw it all. You’ll never understand how much you uplift me with the overwhelming love & support you continue to show,” Minaj said on Instagram to celebrate the announcement.

“Say So (Remix)” marks the first No. 1 single for both Doja Cat and Minaj, although the Trinidad and Tobago-born rapper is no stranger to the Hot 100 chart.

Minaj now holds the record for longest wait for a chart-topper according to Billboard, with “Say So (Remix)” being her 109th song on the charts.

The former record was held by Canadian superstar Justin Bieber, who had to wait for 46 chart entries before his Purpose cut, “What Do You Mean?”, reached the top of the charts.

Minaj has often been vocal about her frustration with the charts, as testified by the lyrics of 2017’s “No Frauds”.

“They say numbers don’t matter/But when they discussing the kings / They turn around and say, ‘LeBron ain’t got six rings!’,” she raps in the star-dubbed single, which features contributions from Drake and Lil Wayne.

Meanwhile, the success of both “Savage” and “Say So (Remix)” marks a historical moment for collaborative songs by solo women artists on the Hot 100 chart.

According to Billboard, only six female-led collaborations have topped the Hot 100, including “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX, “S&M” by Rihanna featuring Britney Spears, and “The Boy Is Mine” by Brandy & Monica.
