Sam Smith cancels remaining SA shows

The singer is said to be deeply upset about disappointing his fans.

Big Concerts announced today that British crooner Sam Smith will not be able to continue performing in Cape Town, with Wednesday and Thursday’s shows now cancelled.

Computicket will be refunding customers, while other outlets will also process full refunds.

Doctors advised the performer against further straining his voice.

Just forty-five minutes into his concert in Cape Town on Tuesday, Smith abruptly left the stage with a voice strain and a message was put up stating the concert was cancelled.

CEO of Big Concerts Justin Van Wyk was quick to assure fans that the cancellation was purely based on the singer’s voice, and had nothing to do with his self-confessed anxiety and depression.

“This is purely about his voice. For those who were there, he was on fire, he was really owning that room, hitting the right notes and suddenly he just felt it. There was something that went wrong and it had to do with his vocals, nothing about his mental health,” said Van Wyk.

Van Wyk added that Big Concerts would be “engaging with Smith’s team to look at options to compensate the fans”.
