Prince Kaybee, Bonang, Mampintsha to help KZN flood victims

Prince Kaybee received messages of gratitude on Tuesday after telling his social media followers that he would be donating R150,000 to families that lost everything in a severe storm that ripped through the eThekwini (Durban) area on Monday night and continued into Tuesday, with devastation also being recorded on the South Coast.

Roads were flooded and washed away, traffic severely disrupted, numerous accidents were reported and several schools and businesses closed for safety reasons.

He said: “Donating 150k to the families that lost their homes in Umlazi. It’s not enough, so if you’re inspired by this post join me, let’s rebuild Umlazi.”

Bonang Matheba also reached out to a non-profit organisation, Country Duty, and asked for information on how she could help.

“I’m so heart broken. What happened in Umlazi today is devastating… How do we help? How can we provide aid? @tumisole… I know you’re always helpful. Please assist me,” she said.

She told the organisation’s founder, Tumi Sole, that she would be “in touch”.

The Country Duty team released a list of nationwide drop off points and banking details for those wishing to assist victims of the flooding.

Musician Mampintsha also encouraged his followers to join him in helping those affected by the storms.

“Umlazi is my home, I will also be donating towards the families that lost their homes ngasekhaya, even if you’re not from Umlazi and you are not affected but have a good heart and join me, let’s rebuild Ulmazi,” he said.

Rapper AKA also reached out to those who could provide information on how to help the Umlazi community.

It was reported on Wednesday morning that the flood death toll from a severe storm that has lashed KwaZulu-Natal has risen to at least 51, according to the provincial government, though the number is set to climb as more bodies are still being recovered.

The province’s local government department said on Wednesday morning that five people were still unaccounted for.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has travelled to the province to visit affected areas.

In Port St Johns, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been deployed to help with rescue and evacuation following severe flooding which has reportedly displaced hundreds of people, EWN reported on Wednesday morning.
