Two big award shows were overshadowed by one big announcement at the weekend.

This, as 947 radio presenter Anele Mdoda – while accepting the award for Favourite Radio Personality of the Year at the 2015 You Spectacular awards – casually dropped her big announcement: She’s pregnant! After bagging her award, host Anne Hirsh asked radio’s fast-talking presenter how she was feeling. Her response was: “Pregnant. Like I have to pee!”

While Mdoda is glowing and celebrating her pregnancy in the public eye, the inaugural MzanziGospel Awards established itself as the new player in the field of award shows, while the You Spectacular brought bling on Saturday. The Fairlands-based Mosaïek theatre played host to the country’s biggest gospel stars, who vied for an award in 22 categories on the evening. Big winners included Stop Nonsons in the Comedian of the Year category, while Mpho Mashishi walked away with the trophy for Best Radio Programme for his spot on Radio Pulpit.

Collaboration of the Year went to L’wei and Mabongi. Blaque Nubon won Hip Hop or RnB Album of the Year, while Loyiso Bala won African Artist of the year. Bala also scooped the Favourite Couple award at the You Spectaculart, an award he shares with his wife Jennifer.

Bala opted to attend the glitzy You awards show, where South African celebrities were out in full force at Emperors Palace.

Minnie Dlamini bagged the Most Stylish Celebrity award in a dramatic white gown with a cape. Dlamini attended the show with her brother Khosini. Cassper Nyovest and TV hunk Jonathan Boynton-Lee led the awards tally. Nyovest won Best Newcomer and Favourite Music Star while Boynton-Lee walked away as Favourite TV Presenter and Sexiest Man. Afrikaans soap 7de Laan also managed to shine at the awards, winning three of the Y trophies.
