DJ Cleo dragged after comment on Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi’s ‘R30 haircut’

The DJ complimented Miss SA's hair and said he loved the natural look.

DJ Cleo’s comments section on Instagram blew up on Tuesday after a comment that backfired. Taking to the social media platform, the DJ shared a picture of newly-crowned Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi and complimented her natural hair and compared it to those who preferred expensive wigs.

“A girl with a R30 haircut won the Miss SA pageant against R5,000 weaves/wigs. I simply love this natural look. Zozibini Tunzi is a true ambassador for African beauty. No wigs or waves for SA’s most beautiful lady. Congratulations Zozibini! Proudly South Africa,” reads the caption on the picture.

The DJ added: “If @zozitunzi is not an inspiration to all young girls then andizi #TheShallowWillMissThePoint.”

His comments section got messy, with most telling him Tunzi’s haircut was definitely not R30 while others told him that the beauty queen was more than her haircut.

Mambox757 wrote: “What does hair have to do with anything? She certainly didn’t win because of her hair. She won because of a whole lot of other attributes which are now being reduced to a ‘R30 haircut’ give her a bit more credit, and no we’re not missing the point,” while Mbalenhle Nkwanyana said: “While I am glad that we finally have a Miss SA that actually looks South African (not South African attempting to be European), it would be nice to look beyond the natural hair and find the real gem beneath. I have no doubt she’s amazing and to say she’s an inspiration simply because of her hairdo is downplaying all her special attributes.”

Others defended the DJ and said his critics had missed the point.

Idols judge Unathi Nkayi said: “As you said the shallow shall miss your point. Forgive them,” while GeoThaz commented:”@djcleo1, abuti, I get your point. Did @djcleo1 say she won because of her hair or did he just mention the fact that she had a most affordable hairstyle? Why do we always look at the negative side? We miss the point of what @djcleo1 was saying because we looked [at] R30 and quick to talk without understanding his point.”
