WATCH: DJ Sbu criticised for his speech at Nipsey Hussle memorial

His critics have asked him who made him the ambassador of Africa.

DJ Sbu divided social media on Wednesday after posting a video of him talking to Americans who had gathered to honour Nipsey Hussle. Speaking the crowd, DJ Sbu said he was there as an ambassador for hip-hop in the entire African continent, a comment that divided his followers.

“The hip-hop community mourns the passing of hip-hop legend @nipseyhussle in Crenshaw Los Angeles California and I happened to be there to represent the continent and pass my condolences,” said DJ Sbu.

While some commended him for his bravery, others asked him who appointed him as an ambassador for the whole continent.

Responding to the critics, he said: “[I appointed] Myself. The day you start travelling to other continents only then you will understand that as soon as you leave your country or continent of origin, automatically you represent where you’re from. No one has to elect you. It’s your consciousness that should kick in.

“I have co-executive produced over 31 multi-platinum award-winning albums (many genres). Seven albums of my own. Helped multiple brothers & sisters become successful artists and big brands in music. SA hip-hop lyricists of all time #RIPHHP and #RIPProkid tell you on their songs about me.”

However, some of them were still not backing down, and said no one sent him to represent Africa, and he should have just said he was there in his personal capacity.
