Emotions run high at Sandy Mokwena’s memorial

The vetran actor's life and career was honoured with moving tributes.

Tears flowed as friends, fans and family gathered at the Scandal! studios in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon to honour the legacy of Bra Sandy Mokwena.

The veteran actor who played Bra Eddie on the e.tv soapie for 13 years died last Wednesday at a hospital after falling ill.

There was not an empty seat at the Sasani Studios as those close to Bra Sandy remembered the man he was.

Close friend and veteran actor, Jerry Mofokeng shed tears as he spoke about his comrade.

“Bra Sandy treated everyone with respect. From number 1 to number 6 on the Scandal! call sheet. Sandy was the only member of the original cast of Scandal! who was still standing. He was a gift,” he said.

Actor Kagiso Modupe also worked closely with Bra Sandy on set, and described him as a mentor who taught him many invaluable lessons.

“Bra Sandy was a pantsula for life and taught me how to court a girl. He would watch the monitor when his fellow actors had kissing scenes, and tell them stop focusing on the kiss and act,” he said.

Kagiso added that Bra Sandy had a nickname for everyone, which was his way of showing everyone they were special.

Bra Sandy will be buried on Friday, 2 February at Heroes Acre in West Park Cemetery after a funeral service at Grace Bible Church from 8am until 10 am.
