Details of SuperSport United player Thuso Phala’s assault involving ex-girlfriend emerge

A supposedly innocent greeting triggered a fight between Thuso Phala's current girlfriend and his ex at an Alexandra pub.

After greeting Phala, Zinhle Mbatha, who once dated the soccer star when she was 18, was allegedly hit by a beer bottle in the head by her ex’s girlfriend.

Mbatha told The Daily Sun she was shocked by the whole incident, as Phala did not help her after she asked him to. Instead, he left with his friends, and when Mbatha’s friend approached him to find out what happened, she too was assaulted and choked.

“When I came back from the bathroom, I saw Zinhle on her knees bleeding. I asked what happened. People told me the story, and I went to the car outside. Thuso got out of the car and choked me. His friends also got out to help him,” said the friend.

A worker from the pub said he witnessed the incident and was told by Phala that because he had money, nothing would come of a police case.

While Mbatha said she was still waiting for confirmation from police about a case being opened, Alexandra police spokesperson Allie Kodisang said it had been opened.

Phala has responded through his team, SuperSport, and denied the allegations.

According to The Sowetan, Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula has also intervened after he saw the images of the bruised women circulating on social media.

“It’s not about who is involved, it’s about ordinary women who sought help on social media and were told that they were struggling to open a case, so I stepped in,” he said.
