In the next few months, a number of galleries are presenting great works from a variety of artists. If you like contemporary art, these exhibitions won’t disappoint.
NovaWoolf at the Third Place
Ilse Lewis, also known as NovaWoolf, is taking The Path to Integration exhibition to The Third Place in Newtown. The collection has previously been unconventionally integrated into The Third Place. In the space, social hierarchies based on ethnicity, race, cultural heritage and economic or social status are defied, to engage in creating spaces for social connection in the city.
The collection traces the journey through the processes of shadow work, strengthening of the ego, releasing of destructive defence mechanisms and integrating the previously fragmented self to achieve wholeness.
Through her art, books and music, Lewis has made sense of her thoughts, and journals to keep track of it all – and this exhibition explores exactly that.
“I am very lucky to have been surrounded by many extremely talented and inspiring creatives and intellectual equals across various fields, whom inspire me in everything that they do, whether through music, literature, design, research, or other professional pursuits,” she says.

A black aesthetic at the Standard Bank Art Gallery
The Standard Bank Gallery is hosting an exciting exhibition of works created by black South African artists between 1970 and 1990. The collection is predominently from the University of Fort Hare Collection.
This is the first time the collection is being presented outside the Eastern Cape since 1992. It features artists like Gerard Sekoto and William Zulu.
The exhibition opens on February 22 and runs until April 18. There are also walkabouts on February 23 and March 9, 16, 30 and April 6.

Barbara Schroeder at the Gerard Sekoto Gallery
The Gerard Sekoto Gallery at the Alliance Française in Johannesburg is hosting an exhibition featuring Barbara Schroeder.
The exhibition follows her Southern African Foundation For Contemporary Art Residency in Johannesburg in partnership with The Project Space, the French Institute and the city of Bordeaux. The exhibition is from today until March 8.

The Art of Lithography at Wits Art Museum
Currently, it is featuring an exhibition titled The Art of Lithography: A Collaborative Expression of LL Editions and Highlights of the WAM Holdings between 2016 and 2018. The museum is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 4pm
