Idris Elba forced to cancel trip to SA

He was scheduled to be in the country today, but apparently was told that paperwork for his daughter was not in order.

“Idris was travelling with his daughter and only at the last minute it came to light she did not have the correct paperwork to enter South Africa. The trip to South Africa had to be cancelled as a result. We apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment caused,” Anthea Petersen, A+E Networks Regional Director, Africa.

Many have speculated that SA’s much maligned new visa regulations for kids are to blame for the actor’s dilemma.

The organisers of Elba’s trip were left scrambling today as the actor was due to appear at the screening of his new movie Mandela, My Dad and Me.

The screening and interviews with Elba have been cancelled for the time being, however Mandela, My Dad and Me will debut on History on DStv on December 6.

Elba was inspired by his role in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom to create an album, mi Mandela, based on his experience of playing Madiba.

Arrangements were made to record the album in South Africa and Mali at the end of 2013. Just before the project began, Elba’s father Winston passed away, which further inspired the music on the album.

While working simultaneously on the album and promoting the film, Elba had director Daniel Vernon document his movements.
