Soweto Gospel Choir group goes global

South Africa's renowned Soweto Gospel Choir has signed a deal with the Classics division of American music label Universal, who will be distributing their new album through North America and Canada.

The award-winning group released their sixth album, Divine Decade, to much critical acclaim earlier in 2013. This year also marks a decade of success for the choir and they are set to commemorate this milestone with a 10th Anniversary Celebration US tour, which kicks off in February 2014.

Commenting on the deal CEO of Universal Music Classics, Elizabeth Sobol, told Media Update, “Soweto Gospel Choir has been a powerful and important presence on the American scene, bringing their inspiring music to concert halls across the US.

“Universal Music Classics is proud to be part of the Choir’s 10th Anniversary celebration as we release Divine Decade in conjunction with their Spring 2014 US tour.”

And Randall Abrahams, MD of Universal Music South Africa, said: “The choir have been a fixture on the international touring circuit and are one of South Africa’s most significant musical assets.

“I’m extremely happy to see this landmark album released in the US market. I believe it will garner a diverse audience of listeners who will be enthralled by the choir’s songs and arrangements.”

The Soweto Gospel Choir’s ‘Divine Decade’ album includes numerous collaborations with high-profile musicians, both local and international, among them U2, Zahara, Elvis Blue, Robert Plant, Johnny Clegg, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
