Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the northeastern Free State, the Golden Gate Highlands National Park will be the venue for the third annual Golden Gate Classic Concert for music lovers across the country.

The three-day concert, which has become one of South Africa’s premier jazz and classical music events, starts on Friday, December 6 and it will bring together some of the country’s top musicians, including the world-renowned Sibongile Khumalo.

The initiative by South African National Parks (SANParks) aims to attract new visitors to the park through the music. They will, hopefully, return back to the park with their families for the breathtaking scenery of the Maluti Mountains.

“Imagine listening to the classical sounds of Beethoven, Bach or Mozart as the universe unveils its spectacular nightly beauty in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park,” said Reynold Thakhuli, acting head of communications at SANParks.

He said the line-up included multi-award winning composer and pianist Bokani Dyer and songbird Thandi Ntuli, as well as Khumalo, who will join a 40-piece orchestra conducted by the revered Kutlwano Masote.

In addition to this line-up will be soprano Zandile Mzazi and members of the Tshwane University of Technology Vocal Art Chorus.

“I am really looking forward to the experience, I’ve heard that the music, scenery and environment is amazing so it should be a good concert,” said Dyer.

Some of the attractions at the park include a Basotho cultural village, Vulture’s Restaurant, Cathedral Cave and a visit to the town of Clarens.

There are various packages on offer, from show only packages to weekend packages combining the show and accommodation.

The concert will start on December 6 with the Bokani Dyer trio and Ntuli, while the Saturday will showcase the legacy and versatility of Khumalo.

Activities available include golf, shooting, arts and crafts, white water rafting, quad and motor bike trails, zip-lining, paint ball shooting, archery, fly fishing, game farms and rock art.
