Review: Comedy gig celebrates five years

A vital comedy night in Johannesburg.

The Keg & Beagle in Linksfield is an unassuming place. A small pub at the bottom of a shopping centre next to the highway newcomers would likely be surprised to discover it has become a hub of nightlife in the area offering various forms of entertainment and a menu that is streets ahead of its chain competitors.

On Wednesday night the Keg celebrated a significant milestone in stand up comedy, having run a comedy night every first Wednesday of the month for the past five years. Owner Chris Williams is an avowed comedy fan and the line ups have reflected that with every quality comedian in the country having stood on their stage at some point over that time.

“I think we still need to get Stuart Taylor up from Cape Town, but otherwise I am struggling to think of people who haven’t been here,” he laughs.

Wednesday night’s comedy is a case in point with crowd favourite Dave Levinsohn holding down hosting duties for a line up that included Twitter favourite Lindy Johnson, Gavin Kelly and Daily show Africa correspondent Loyiso Madinga as headliner.

For just R30 the value is clear as each month stars such as John Vlismas, Joey Rasdien, Conrad Koch, Jason Goliath and Kagiso Lediga have made appearances and with five years under their belt and a fierce reputation to maintain this is sure to continue.
