Boktown is the place to be

For R30 it’s the best place to watch the game, and there will be guest appearances by SA rugby legends.

A packed Ellis Park or Loftus Versfeld stadium almost feels like a relic of the past.

Maybe it’s the large number of sport options available on pay channels that persuaded families to shift to watching in their homes. At least until Boktown started at Montecasino circa 2013.

The concept was soon rolled out at other Tsogo Sun resorts, and now it’s become a lively sport event with a distinct lifestyle angle.

From the suds in the beer garden to the green and gold everywhere, even if you hate the idea of rugby, Boktown has found an audience willing to hug strangers and cheer and jeer as the game unfolds.

At Silverstar Casino on the West Rand, the Springbok rugby supporters’ village is meant to be immersive and have a very human atmosphere.

And whereas the Colosseum in Rome thousands of years ago used humans to provide violent entertainment, here the crowds only call for the blood of the team facing off against the Springboks.

Next month the village offers visitors the opportunity to watch games live on the big screen with add-ons like live entertainment, DJs, interactive activities for kids, bars, food and competitions built on united support for the national rugby team.

One of the big drawcards that will likely cause a lively scrum will be guest appearances by South African rugby legends.

Spend R30 on your entry ticket and grab your free beer, cider, glass of wine, soft drink or water to kick off the festivities. What a great deal – you score even if the team ends up losing the game.

For an ideal experience you have to dress warmly, but there might just be some boerewors on offer in the spots where Tsogo Sun hosts the events.

It’s always odd when casino resorts get the status of entertainment meccas, but adding live sporting events in this sort of setting elevates the sporting experience.

The only possible gripe is that other major events, like the Africa Cup of Nations, didn’t get the same sort of treatment. But considering Boktown’s popularity, that might change soon.

South Africa is a sport-crazy country and incorporating some of our favourite pastimes and a family-friendly environment says a lot. And for once these sort of events aren’t exclusive.

The latest Boktown is running until August 17 and for one of the best South African experiences, you need to get there (and even take the family).
