SABC cans JJ Tabane’s show, replaces it with Redi Tlhabi

The South African Broadcasting Cooperation has confirmed that veteran broadcaster Redi Tlhabi has joined it and would present her first show from this Sunday.
The new current affairs show Unfiltered would replace Onkgopotse JJ Tabane’s Frankly Speaking which aired on both SABC news channel 404 on DStv and on SABC 3 every Sunday at 8.30pm.
Tabane was recently fired by Gauteng talk radio station Power FM after he used his show to apologise to acting government communications head Phumla Williams.
He had gotten into a Twitter spat with political commentator Chris Vick about Williams’ testimony at the state capture inquiry.
Power FM said Tabane had “committed serious material breaches of the provisions of our independent contractor agreement”.
On Wednesday, the SABC did not say why Tabane’s show was canned but said that Tlhabi “brings immense experience and knowledge in the television news domain, including working with international broadcasting platforms such as Aljazeera and BBC World News”.
SABC head of news and current affairs Phathiswa Magopeni said the public broadcaster was taking an unrestrained, courageous, and forthright approach to discuss tough issues facing South Africans.
“Redi is a dynamic and versatile journalist who fits the profile of the show and our editorial character very well. We are happy to welcome her back as part of the SABC News team.”
