Black Mirror season 5 will have an interactive episode

Viewers will have a “choose your own adventure” option in the next season of Charlie Brooker's dystopian sci-fi show.

Black Mirror fans will know that this particular Netflix show has a knack for exploring the social implications of technology – usually through a myopic lense.

Now, it seems the show is about to become rather meta, by offering viewers an interactive feature in its upcoming fifth season, which is apparently due to land before the end of this year.

According to a report on Bloomberg, viewers will be able to choose their own ending in one of the new episodes of Black Mirror’s 5th season. Netflix has yet to announce the release date for the new season, but Bloomberg reports it’s expected to drop sometime this coming December.

If this sounds like the stuff of science fiction (even if it it’s a bit too upbeat to be considered the stuff of Black Mirror), well it’s not like Netflix hasn’t attempted something like this before. In one of its offering available overseas, ‘Puss In Book’, viewers have the option of choosing a foe for the titular character – a tree or a god – and both versions of the story.

That said, Black Mirror seems like the perfect vehicle for this sort of interactive storytelling. It also may satiate some fans of the series, who turned up their noses at how upbeat the endings of the fourth season’s episodes. Given series creator Charlie Brooker’s penchant for mingling tech through his plots, its hard to imagine a situation where this feature wouldn’t be put to great use in an episode’s narrative.
