The Tutus set to celebrate

South African Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will be celebrating his 82nd birthday on Monday, just a week before the milestone 80th birthday of his wife Leah on 14 October.

The SABC reports that various events have been lined-up to celebrate the beloved Archbishop’s birthday, among these a charitable collaboration between the Desmond Tutu Foundation and bird conservation group SANCCOB to clean up Cape Town’s Lagoon Beach on Monday morning.

In the evening, former head of the UN, Kofi Annan, will honour the renowned social rights activist by presenting the annual Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture at the University of the Western Cape.

On Sunday, a church service in honour of Leah Tutu kicked off an assortment of celebratory occasions to also commemorate the couple’s 58 years of marriage.

The Archbishop, a veteran human rights activist, and his wife characteristically welcomed the celebrations by giving to others when they presented the Marconi Beam Primary school in Milnerton with a new multi-purpose sports ground on Saturday. The couple’s Legacy Foundation helped the school’s principal to secure the land from the local municipality.
