WATCH: Giant wave sweeps away tourists at waterpark

44 people were injured when a wave machine malfunctioned

A malfunction in a wave pool at the Shuiyun water park in Jilin, China has injured 44 people when it caused the pool to generate a wave at maximum velocity.

Footage from the event, which was initially thought to have been caused by a negligent employee, shows a towering wall of water sweeping through a swimming pool packed with people.

The wave can be seen sweeping away people, and tourists on the sides starting to run when they realise the wave was going to break out over the size of the pool.

A terse statement from the waterpark’s spokesperson denied that the malfunction had been major saying that “only ten people had been injured”.

“The wave pool was closed for a day for repairs. It’s already been fixed and will be open tomorrow,” he said.
