Potter about
Why not take mom to see some art? An unsung gem is the Association of Arts Pretoria, which this month is featuring the work of Karen van der Riet.
Her fascination with clay began in 1976 when she attended pottery classes. She soon set up her own studio in KwaZulu-Natal.
She’s worked in stoneware, in the Leach tradition, and made functional pieces which were fired in a gas kiln.
Van der Riet is now creating objects of beauty in porcelain. Forms are classic, simple and glazing is a continuous experiment.
She’s a member of Ceramics SA and has received several regional and national awards.
Her exhibition opens tomorrow and runs until May 30.

Muppets for mom
Want to see your mom laugh at something naughty? Why not take a trip to Avenue Q at Montecasino?
This hilarious musical is the 2004 winner of Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book at the Tony Awards.
Described as “part flesh, part felt, and packed with heart”, this laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a Princeton university graduate who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q and faces life’s realities head-on.

If you happen to be in the Mother City (a fitting spot) for Mother’s Day why not celebrate at The Ritz Hotel in Sea Point?
With a seven-course gala lunch at Top of The Ritz, the Cape’s only revolving restaurant, you can enjoy the “A Journey of Flavours Through Cape Town” culinary experience on the 23rd floor.
The menu will include entrées such as Knysna Oysters and The Ritz, an eye-catching reinvention of a classic avocado ritz.
The main meal is a choice between grilled beef sirloin, served with free range quail egg, fondant potato, Prego jus and Morongo purée, or a fresh line fish that comes with salt and vinegar potato cigars, kelp chips and a homemade tartare, or a Karoo rack of lamb served with mint pea, spinach farce, truffle celeriac purée and fynbos croquette.
Dessert includes a smoked chocolate mousse, tea, coffee and petit fours. Mother’s Day at Top of The Ritz is available at R850 per person and includes a glass of Méthode Cap Classique on arrival.

Something Italian
Moms aren’t all MCC and glitter – women like a good cold brew, too.
Independent drinks company Truman & Orange is developing a reputation for sourcing drinks from parts of the world renowned for their long history of crafting premium products.
Hot on the heels of their perfectly-timed Italian import, Malfy Gin, and the more recently-launched world’s number 1 Prosecco, Mionetto, the company has recently introduced a premium Italian beer: Mazzatti Birra Superiore.
Mazzatti Birra Superiore is a Birra Tradizione made at a 160-year-old brewery. Brewed using traditional Italian techniques and only the highest quality ingredients, Mazzatti beers are crisp and clean with a fuller, more satisfying body (gusto rotundo) than mass-produced beers.
Mazzatti Birra Superiore retails for approximately R26.
