Stylish and seamless – Huawei Watch 3 actually inspires you to be healthier

This smartwatch inspired a newbie to the wearables space make a concerted effort to take her health seriously.

Chinese tech giant Huawei recently launched two new smartwatches, the Huawei Watch 3 and the Watch 3 Pro, and if these are anything to go by, they are well on their way to ensuring users’ lives are smarter and healthier, by providing enhanced interaction and independent connectivity.

Smart watches are known for their convenience, and have become a must-have accessory for everyone from fitness fanatics to business people.

I was given the opportunity to sample a Huawei Watch Series 3 Pro for about two weeks, to see what all the hype was about.

Wearing a smartwatch for the first time, I realised how light the starter pack was on instructions.

The box just has the USB charger and small paper with instructions. Luckily, I quickly realised the how-to-use guide could be found on the Huawei Health app.

The connection is pretty quick and automatically links up to your phone, making the set-up of the watch easy, even for those who are not that tech savvy.

By activating the eSIM service on your smartphone, you can use your phone number on your Huawei Watch 3, and enjoy the same data and voice tariff plans as you do on your phone.

The watch is extremely light in weight, despite its large appearance and it doesn’t lack in style either.

The smartwatch promises an ultra-long battery life, supporting up to five-days of battery life in smart mode and up to 21 days in ultra-long mode. In actual use, I managed to get about two to three days of use out of it before needing to recharge.

You can wear it while you sleep as well, with the sleep app gathering valuable insight into the depth and quality of your sleep. There are three sleep qualities which are deep sleep (preferred), light, and REM sleep. The sleep data showed that I am a light sleeper.

Light sleep, as the Health app will inform you is when the brain wave activity, heart rate, and breathing rate all slow down, making it easier to wake up during this sleep stage.

This can damage sleep quality, cause fatigue and difficulty waking up. The app does, however, give you helpful information on how to avoid this.

This includes creating a quiet and comfortable environment, having a regular sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine after midday etc. It is as if the human brain is wired for you to start achieving the desired deep sleep numbers and recommend eight hours of sleep when wearing the watch.

There is a concerted effort to be on the healthy side and exercise harder when wearing the smartwatch.

Because of this, there is a vast amount of workout categories to choose from to track your workouts, including 17 professional workouts, 12 outdoor workouts, and seven indoor workouts.

I took my exercise routine more seriously during this time, creating new fitness goals because there’s concise feedback on my progress and if this means working towards my best fitness life, I’m fully on board.

There is one complaint I repeatedly heard from smartwatch wearers, which is that before this Huawei series some smartwatches weren’t able to respond to messages or calls using the watch. It would alert you to an incoming message, email and call but you had to respond on your smartphone.

Say goodbye to this problem!

You can reply via text using the Huawei Watch 3 series and yes the touchscreen keyboard is much smaller and could be difficult to navigate for people with big hands, but it does work.

Through their super device capability, the watch is also supported by MeeTime, which enables you to transfer a MeeTime call to a smart screen through your smartwatch. If your smartwatch’s eSIM is activated, you can make and receive MeeTime audio calls without your smartphone on you, too.

For any secret Santa’s out there this is top of the list. The Huawei Watch 3 made it feel like it was a necessity for every day.

The Huawei Watch 3 is priced at R7,299, and the Huawei Watch 3 Pro is priced at R7,999.
