Review: Intel-based Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X

Lenovo’s laptop range continues to grow, with a seemingly endless array of product lines.

The Intel-based Yoga Slim 7i Pro I reviewed has another processor-based counterpart in the Yoga Slim 7 Pro.

Made to merge portability and versatility with more power, Lenovo’s Yoga 2-in-1 convertible laptops were pioneers in opening possibilities for users to flip and fold from work to play.

Lenovo said the Yoga Slim line exemplifies the idea of performance and portability.

“These ultra-slim laptops integrate a comfort edge design with soft contours for easier and more comfortable mobility and handling.”

Specifications

The build quality of Yoga Slim 7i Pro X is typically robust, with an aluminium chassis lending the 1.3kg laptop a solid feel.

Visually simple, the cover features the Yoga name etched in the corner.

There’s a little flex in the lid, but not enough to cause concern, and the base is very robust.

The 14-inch screen with thin bezels sits in a chassis measuring 312.4mm wide by 221.4mm deep, with thickness tapering from 16.9mm at the back to 14.6mm at the front.

The laptop is powered by Intel Evo, with 12th Gen Intel Core i7 processors NVIDIA Studio-validated for enhanced creativity.

Display

The 14-inch screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio, and anyone who spends a good proportion of their time working with documents will appreciate the extra height over a 16:9 screen.

Resolutions of 2 880 by 1 800 (243ppi) and 2 240 by 1 400 (189ppi) are available/ The 2.8K screen offers 400 nits of brightness, with 300 nits available on the 2.2K version. Both variants support 100% of the sRGB colour gamut.

Although the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X comes with a flexible display – 180 degrees to be exact – the functionalities this offers stays limited considering this is not a touchscreen display.

Connectivity

The Yoga Slim 7i Pro X boasts a pair of USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back of the left edge, while the right edge carries a USB-A port and a 3.5mm audio in/out jack, along with the power button.

 If you need connections like HDMI, RJ-45 Ethernet or an SD card slot, you’ll need to consider a docking station.

Keyboard

The keyboard has a light action with plenty of bounce, making touch-typing easy and comfortable.

It has two levels of backlight, which can be cycled through using the Fn key and space bar. There’s also an ‘auto’ option; select this and the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X uses the ambient light level detected by the webcam to set the backlight. 

The tracks pad on the Lenovo offers supersmooth scrolling and is easy to use and there no separate left or right click buttons.

Surprisingly there is no fingerprint reader, something you can find in medium segment laptops now. There is a face sign-in option which works well enough, but it could be a bit snappier.

Facial recognition technology securely logs you in an instant. Attention sensors issue a Privacy Alert when someone’s shoulder-surfing, and automatically logs you out when you leave, ensuring your work stays private.

Speakers

The stereo speakers output sound out via grilles on the bottom of the chassis. Positioned near the front, they only partly take advantage of the upward curve of the base.

Battery

The Lenovo laptop itself charges quickly. Lenovo claims you can get two hours of use after a 15-minute charge.

Verdict

The Lenovo YogaSlim 7i Pro X is an all killer, no filler laptop. It looks good, build quality is great, the screen is sharp and it has a quality glass touchpad.

It is pitched as a premium, portable ultrabook and while it ticks those boxes what it falls short of is offering more value-adds such as a touchscreen and a long battery life.
